Compress images
Make photos smaller to send or store. It happens on your device: nothing is uploaded.
How to compress images
- Choose the photos to compress, or drop them anywhere on this page.
- Pick how much to compress, and whether to keep each photo’s format.
- Select Compress, then download the results.
Your files stay on your device
This tool runs inside your browser: your photos are processed on your device and never uploaded. Your browser enforces which servers the page may talk to, and none of them is sent your files. Here's how you can check. Once you've used it, it works offline too.
Questions
- How much smaller will my photos get?
- Phone photos often shrink to a quarter of their size or less at Recommended, with little difference you can see. Photos that were already compressed hard shrink less. If a photo can’t be made smaller, you get the original back, unchanged.
- What do the levels do?
- High quality keeps the full size and saves at high quality. Recommended also scales very large photos down to 2560 pixels on the longest side, plenty for screens and sharing. Smallest file scales to 1600 pixels and saves at a lower quality, for email and slow connections.
- Should I choose WebP?
- WebP files are usually a quarter to a third smaller than JPG at the same quality, and every current browser and phone opens them. Some older apps and printing services still want JPG. Safari can’t save WebP, so the choice only appears where your browser can.
- Why did my PNG get bigger, or stay the same?
- PNG never loses quality, so it can’t be squeezed the way photos can. For photos saved as PNG, choose JPG or WebP to make them much smaller. For screenshots and drawings, PNG is often already the right choice.
- Is the location and camera information kept?
- No. Compressed photos are saved without location, camera or date information, and they’re turned the right way up, so nothing is lost visually. To keep that information and only remove the location, use Remove location and EXIF instead.
- Are my photos uploaded?
- No. They are compressed by your browser, on your device, and saved straight back to it.
