Remove location and EXIF data from photos
See where your photos were taken, and what else they say about you, then remove it before you share them. It happens on your device: nothing is uploaded.
How to remove photo location and EXIF data
- Choose the photos, or drop them anywhere on this page. Each one shows what it gives away.
- Pick whether to remove everything or only the location.
- Select Remove, then download the cleaned photos.
Your files stay on your device
This tool runs inside your browser: your photos are processed on your device and never uploaded. Your browser enforces which servers the page may talk to, and none of them is sent your files. Here's how you can check. Once you've used it, it works offline too.
Questions
- What does a photo give away?
- Most phones save where a photo was taken (to within a few metres), the date and time, and the phone’s make and model. Editing apps add their name, and some cameras add the owner’s name. Anyone you send the original file to can read all of it.
- Does removing it lower the quality?
- No. The picture isn’t re-saved: only the information around it is taken out, so the photo is exactly the same, pixel for pixel. Its colour profile stays, so colours don’t shift, and photos stay the right way up.
- What’s the difference between the two choices?
- Remove everything takes out all the extra information: location, camera, date, names and notes. Remove location only takes out where it was taken and keeps the rest, such as the date, so photo apps still sort it correctly.
- Doesn’t WhatsApp or Instagram remove it anyway?
- Many social apps remove the location when they post, but email, cloud links, chat apps sending “as a file” and marketplaces often pass the original on unchanged. Cleaning the photo yourself means you don’t have to rely on them.
- Which photos work?
- JPEG, PNG and WebP. iPhone HEIC photos aren’t supported here yet; iPhones usually turn them into JPEG when you share or email them.
- Are my photos uploaded?
- No. They are read and cleaned by your browser, on your device, and saved straight back to it.
