Compress video
Make videos smaller to send and share, at the quality and size you choose. It happens on your device: nothing is uploaded.
How to compress video
- Choose the videos to compress, or drop them anywhere on this page.
- Pick how small, and whether to make the picture smaller too.
- Select Compress, then download the results.
Your files stay on your device
This tool runs inside your browser: your videos are processed on your device and never uploaded. Your browser enforces which servers the page may talk to, and none of them is sent your files. Here's how you can check. Once you've used it, it works offline too.
Questions
- How much smaller will my video get?
- It depends on the video. Phone videos are recorded at a high bitrate, so they often shrink to a quarter or less. A video that’s already compressed (from a messaging app, say) may hardly shrink at all; if a result comes out larger, keep the original.
- Which choice should I pick?
- Balanced is right for most videos: hard to tell from the original on a phone, and much smaller. Smallest suits screen recordings and videos to send over a slow connection. Making the picture smaller (720p, say) saves the most of all, and looks the same on a phone screen.
- How do I get a video under a size limit for email or WhatsApp?
- Try Smallest with 720p first. Each result shows its new size; if it’s still too big, try 480p. Shorter videos are easier: to send part of one, trim it first with Cut and trim video.
- Does it keep the sound?
- Yes. The sound is kept as it is where it can be, and otherwise re-encoded at good quality.
- Why does it take a while?
- Compressing means re-encoding every frame, which your device’s video encoder does. A computer manages several times real time; a phone is slower and gets warm on long videos.
- Are my videos uploaded?
- No. They are compressed by your browser, on your device, and saved straight back to it.
