Your files stay on your device

Questions

Which formats can I convert from?
MP4, MOV (from iPhones and cameras), MKV, WebM, 3GP and MPEG-TS, in any codec your browser can play. Chrome and Edge play the most; if a video won’t open in one browser, try another.
Which format should I choose?
MP4 with H.264 plays on every phone, computer, TV and website. WebM is for websites and is often smaller, but some Apple devices and editing apps won’t open it.
Does converting lower the quality?
Often not at all. Many MOV and MKV files already hold H.264 video, and then it’s copied into the MP4 as it is: no quality lost, and done in seconds. Otherwise the video is re-encoded at high quality, which is very hard to tell from the original.
Why does it take a while?
Re-encoding a video is heavy work, done by your device’s own video encoder. A computer manages several times real time; a phone is slower, and gets warm on long videos. Copying (above) takes seconds.
Is there a size limit?
No. Videos are read from your disk as they’re needed and the result is written back to your browser’s storage, so even long, large videos work, as long as your device has the free space.
Are my videos uploaded?
No. They are converted by your browser, on your device, and saved straight back to it.
