Make a GIF from a video
Pick a few seconds of a video and turn them into a GIF. It happens on your device: nothing is uploaded.
How to video to GIF
- Choose a video, or drop it anywhere on this page.
- Pick the seconds you want on the film strip (up to a minute), and play them to check.
- Choose the size and smoothness.
- Select Make GIF, look at the result, then download it.
Your files stay on your device
This tool runs inside your browser: your video are processed on your device and never uploaded. Your browser enforces which servers the page may talk to, and none of them is sent your files. Here's how you can check. Once you've used it, it works offline too.
Questions
- How long can a GIF be?
- Up to a minute, but GIFs grow large quickly: a few seconds is best for sharing. For anything longer, a short MP4 (Cut and trim video) is far smaller and keeps the sound.
- Why is my GIF so large?
- GIF is an old format that stores every frame almost whole. A smaller size and fewer frames a second make the biggest difference; so does a shorter stretch.
- Why do the colours look slightly off?
- A GIF frame can hold only 256 colours, so smooth gradients (a sky, skin) turn slightly banded. Each frame gets the best 256 colours for it.
- Does it keep the sound?
- No: GIFs have no sound. To share a short clip with sound, trim it as a video instead.
- Is my video uploaded?
- No. The GIF is made by your browser, on your device, and saved straight back to it.
